MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM DEAN
To our prospective students:
This is a tremendously exciting time to enter into Medicine. The molecular/scientific revolution has given us a new understanding of health and disease and provided new therapeutic interventions
for our patients. New insights into statistics and epidemiology have allowed more refined analyses of population data so that we now know how to better advise our patients to remain
healthy. The information explosion, along with electronic data storage, has allowed physicians – and their patients – unparalleled access to information on the internet.
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has a long tradition of excellence and innovation in medical education, and is again staying ahead of the times by revising its curriculum
to address the new opportunities that will be afforded to physicians in the coming years. The Western Reserve2 curriculum, initiated with the Class of 2010 in the University Program,
injects strong themes of scholarship, civic professionalism and leadership into the program right from the start, taught in parallel with dynamic analyses of the basic sciences that underpin
medical practice. We believe that the physician best able to evaluate new advances in medicine is one who has conducted research, so the generation of original knowledge is now part of
the medical school curricular requirements. The College program orientation has always been toward original studies and most students are now opting to obtain the M.S. degree in addition
to the M.D. Our school is proud to offer a robust clinical training environment which allows our students the opportunity to rotate among all of the major teaching hospitals in the city;
during the clinical years, students from all of our programs can be assured of a diverse and enriching experience. Most importantly, WR2 is a learner-centered curriculum which is designed to
inculcate habits of lifelong learning and to equip the learner with the tools to access and evaluate new information.
Our faculty has always been our greatest asset. Our dedicated faculty not only designed our new curriculum but have also committed to its continuous evaluation and improvement. The learner-centered
curriculum is enthusiastically supported by our faculty members who facilitate small groups, design and deliver key lectures, and manage the curricular content. Our faculty members have
as their goal the development of students as colleagues, and we are proud of our current students and of our graduates who are now practicing medicine.
Medical education is a never-ending and marvelous adventure, and we hope you will share it with us.
Sincerely,
Pamela B. Davis, M.D., Ph.D.
