DEPARTMENT OF UROLOGY - RESEARCH

Dr. Seftel

The research program in sexual dysfunction encompasses both clinical and basic science projects. Clinically, research programs include testing of novel alternate uses of sildenafil; phase 2 and 3 trials of various oral and topical therapies for  erectile dysfunction (ED); evaluation of sleep disorders and hypoxia as they relate to ED; and clinical trials of new testing devices for ED. Collaborative research projects include evaluation of sperm for chromosomal abnormalities for male factor infertility and examining T cells for autoimmune prostatitis.
The basic science research focus is centered on understanding the mechanisms of diabetes-related  ED. Rat, rabbit and human tissue are used in effort to understand how diabetes affects the nitric oxide pathway of erections. A second project investigates diabetes's effects on nitric oxide synthase, protein kinase C or collagen deposition. A related project evaluates the hypoxic mechanisms of ED in a rat model in collaboration with our pulmonary division.
